Claude Code for go-to-market: what it does well, and where it breaks

Claude Code is an agent that reads files, runs commands and calls your tools. Pointed at go-to-market work, it does real jobs, as long as a person keeps the final review.

Illustrative

The short answer

Use Claude Code for go-to-market jobs that are mostly reading, cleaning and writing: researching accounts against your ICP, cleaning and merging lists, drafting segment-specific copy for you to edit, and turning CRM data into reports. Connect it to your CRM through MCP and it can read records directly; package a job as a skill and it runs the same way every time.

Do not let it send anything by itself. Keep a person reviewing every list and every message before it goes out, and keep repeatable, scheduled enrichment in a tool built for it, such as Clay.

What Claude Code is

Claude Code is Anthropic's agentic coding tool. It runs in your terminal, in VS Code and JetBrains, in a desktop app and on the web. You give it a task in plain language; it reads files, runs commands, writes files and calls tools until the task is done, asking before it does anything you have not allowed.

A few building blocks make it useful outside code, each documented by Anthropic:

  • MCP servers connect it to other software, such as your CRM, so it can read and update records while it works.
  • Skills package a repeatable way of doing a task: a folder with a SKILL.md file of instructions, used when relevant or called by name (for example /research-accounts). Its full instructions load only when it is used.
  • Subagents run a side task in their own context, with their own tools and permissions, and hand back only the result: useful for researching 40 accounts without flooding the main conversation.
  • Hooks run your own check at fixed points, for example before any tool call, and can block it: a guard that stops anything from sending.
  • Headless runs (claude -p) run a task without the chat, so a job can run from a script; routines run it on Anthropic's cloud on a schedule, at most hourly.

Five go-to-market jobs it does well

These are no longer edge cases: in April 2026, Kyle Poyar and Maja Voje of Growth Unhinged surveyed 200 go-to-market operators who already use Claude Code or Cowork for this kind of work. The jobs below are the ones practitioner write-ups in the sources describe most often.

1. ICP research from your own data

Give it a CRM export of won and lost deals and ask which segments convert. It can group by industry, size and source, and write up the pattern with the rows that support it. Your data, not a generic persona.

2. Account research at list scale

For each company on a list, it can check the website against your ICP criteria and record the reason for each score. This is where it saves the most time, and where it needs the most checking: practitioners report that simple scripts over a CSV can go wrong partway through when the research steps differ from company to company.

3. List cleanup

Deduplicating, normalizing job titles and company domains, and merging files from different sources are tedious and well defined, which is exactly what it does reliably. One practitioner write-up describes normalizing about 15 spellings of "VP Sales" into one title in a single pass.

4. Copy drafts by segment

With your positioning in a file, it drafts a first-touch email per segment for you to edit. Drafts, not sends: the review step is what keeps quality and compliance in your hands.

5. Reporting from the CRM

Anthropic's customer story on OpusClip describes a weekly revenue report built with Claude Code: call transcripts summarized in parallel, combined with HubSpot and Linear data into an executive brief with coaching notes per rep, in about 15 minutes per run.

Connect it to your CRM with MCP

HubSpot runs a remote MCP server: a hosted endpoint that lets AI tools work with HubSpot CRM data, and the same server powers HubSpot's own connectors for Claude and other assistants. Claude Code can add MCP servers like this one, so it can look up contacts, companies and deals while it works. Open-source skill sets exist for this too: one published on GitHub packages 37 Claude Code skills for auditing, cleaning and enriching a HubSpot portal.

Run a job on a schedule

A job you run every week should not depend on you remembering it. Write it once as a skill, run it by hand until the output holds, then run it headless or as a routine. Routines run on Anthropic's cloud even when your computer is off, at most once an hour, on the Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans; GitHub Actions is the other common way to put a run on a timer.

Claude Code or Clay?

They are usually used together, not instead of each other. Practitioners describe Claude Code as the layer for custom logic and research, and Clay as the layer for repeatable enrichment across many data providers (Clay pricing, explained (opens in a new tab)).

Where it breaks

  • Messy rows. When companies need different research paths, results drift. Check a sample of every batch.
  • Confident mistakes. A wrong job title or funding round reads as convincingly as a right one. Anything that will be sent needs a source you can click.
  • Permissions. An agent that can write to your CRM can also overwrite it. Grant write access last, and use a hook to block anything you never want it to do.
  • Platform rules. Never use it to automate LinkedIn; LinkedIn prohibits automation (see LinkedIn automation tools compared (opens in a new tab)). Cold email it helps draft is still subject to anti-spam law.
  • Cost at volume. Long research runs use more of your plan or more API tokens; measure a batch before you scale it.

What it costs

Claude Code is included in every paid Claude plan and shares its usage limits with chat. A founder working alone usually starts on Pro; heavy daily research runs push toward Max; a team that shares skills and settings uses Team.

Questions

Is Claude Code only for developers?

No. It is a coding tool, but go-to-market teams use it for research, list cleanup, drafting and reporting, because those jobs are files, data and instructions. You need to be comfortable reading its output and checking it.

Can Claude Code replace Clay?

Not for repeatable waterfall enrichment across many providers, which Clay is built for. It is strong at custom logic and research that Clay handles less easily, so most teams that use both keep each for its own job.

Can Claude Code send cold emails?

It can call APIs, so technically it could. It should not: keep sending in your sequencer, with a person approving the list and the copy, and anti-spam law applies to every message either way.

Does Claude Code work with HubSpot?

Yes. HubSpot runs a remote MCP server that AI tools connect to, and Claude Code can use MCP servers. Start read-only and widen access once the output holds up.

Can Claude Code run a job on a schedule?

Yes. Run it headless with claude -p from a script, schedule it with GitHub Actions, or use a routine, which runs on Anthropic's cloud at most hourly on Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans.

How much does Claude Code cost?

It is included in Claude's Pro plan ($20 a month, or about $17 billed annually), the Max plans ($100 or $200 a month) and Team ($25 a seat monthly), or billed per token through the API, as of October 2026.
