The best CRM for startups: HubSpot, Attio, Pipedrive, Salesforce Starter and Folk
The first CRM is the one your outbound results land in. The right pick depends less on features than on who sells, how many seats and what you will connect it to.
Disclosure: SaaS Relaunch is an Instantly Solutions Partner, and Instantly is one of the tools we set up for clients, who own and fund their own accounts. The partnership does not decide any verdict here: every claim links to its source.
The short answer
Start on HubSpot's free CRM (up to 2 users and 1,000 contacts) if you want the widest set of integrations and a path to marketing and service tools later, or on Attio, free for up to three seats and 50,000 records, if you want AI and enrichment built into the CRM. Both cost nothing until you need paid features.
Choose Pipedrive if a small sales team lives in a deal pipeline and wants it simple, Folk if your selling is relationship-led and starts on LinkedIn, and Salesforce Starter if you already know you will grow into Salesforce.
What a startup actually needs from a CRM
At the start, a CRM does four jobs: it holds every company, person and deal; it shows the pipeline by stage; it logs emails and meetings without manual entry; and it connects to the tools that feed it, above all your sequencer and calendar. Everything else, from forecasting to territories, can wait.
So the useful questions are short. How many people will use it this year? Is selling founder-led, or does a small team run deals? Which tools must sync with it? And will marketing and support live in the same system later? The answers pick the CRM more reliably than a feature grid.
The five CRMs at a glance
| CRM | Built for | Free plan | Entry paid plan | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| HubSpot | Teams that will add marketing and service later | Yes: up to 2 users and 1,000 contacts | Starter: $20 per seat a month, list price | Sequences and workflows start on Professional |
| Attio | AI-native workflows and enrichment | Yes: up to 3 seats and 50,000 records | Plus: $35 per seat a month billed annually, $44 monthly | Plus is capped at 10 seats; custom objects need Pro |
| Pipedrive | Small sales teams living in a pipeline | No: a 14-day trial | Lite: $14 per seat a month billed annually | No email sync or automations on Lite |
| Salesforce Starter | Teams that will grow into Salesforce | Free Suite for 2 users | Starter Suite: $25 per user a month | Higher editions are billed annually |
| Folk | Relationship-led selling from LinkedIn | No: a 14-day trial | Standard: $24 per user a month billed annually, $30 monthly | Deals and sequences are on Premium |
Free plans, compared
Three of the five have a free plan, and they are not equal. HubSpot's free CRM gives up to 2 users and 1,000 contacts with no expiry, plus email tracking in Gmail and Outlook and a meeting scheduler that syncs your calendar. Attio Free gives up to 3 seats, 50,000 records and 3 objects, syncs email and calendar on every plan (one account per member on Free) and includes AI credits. Salesforce's Free Suite gives 2 users and does not expire as long as you log in. Pipedrive and Folk offer 14-day trials instead.
| HubSpot free | Attio Free | Salesforce Free Suite | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Users | Up to 2 | Up to 3 seats | 2 users |
| Records | 1,000 contacts | 50,000 records, 3 objects | Not stated |
| Email and calendar | Email tracking and a meeting scheduler | Sync on every plan; one account per member on Free | Gmail and Outlook from Starter |
| AI | Breeze assistant included | AI on credits: 100 per seat and 250 shared a month | Email drafting and record summaries |
| Held back | Sequences, workflows and forecasting need Professional | No extra credits; custom objects need Pro | Starter Suite for more than 2 users |
What it costs to step up
The free plans are generous; the jump that hurts is to the plan where automation lives. HubSpot's sequences, workflows and forecasting need Sales Hub Professional, at $90 a seat a month on HubSpot's pricing page plus a required one-time onboarding fee of $1,500. Attio's custom objects need Pro at $79 a seat (annual); Attio vs HubSpot (opens in a new tab) compares the two head to head. Pipedrive starts automations and email sync on Growth at $39.

Which CRMs connect to your outbound tools
A CRM that does not hear from your sequencer is a spreadsheet with a login. Before you choose, check the sync you depend on, from the CRM's marketplace or the outbound tool's own help center.

HubSpot for Startups: the discount, and who qualifies
HubSpot for Startups is HubSpot's discount program for early-stage companies. It discounts Professional and Enterprise plans (Starter only when bundled with them), for startups that have not already paid for the same product, and it usually runs through an approved partner such as an accelerator, incubator or investor.
Third-party guides report up to 90 percent off the first year for the top tier, with smaller discounts in years two and three and about 30 percent for lower tiers. The figures differ from guide to guide, so confirm the current terms with HubSpot before you plan around them.
For a startup that starts on the free CRM anyway, the program matters at the moment you need Professional features, where most of HubSpot's automation lives. Check your eligibility before that upgrade, not after it. The tiers, the year-by-year cost and how to apply are in HubSpot for startups: the free CRM and the startup discount (opens in a new tab).
Which CRM fits which stage
| Stage | A good fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Solo founder, before the first customer | HubSpot free or Attio Free | Both cost nothing and hold everything outbound produces |
| Founder plus one or two sellers | Attio Plus, Pipedrive Growth or HubSpot Starter | Automation and reporting start to pay for their seats |
| Selling to enterprises | Salesforce Starter or HubSpot Professional | Buyers and future hires expect the platform |
| Network and LinkedIn-led selling | Folk | Contacts arrive from LinkedIn in a click |
Choose HubSpot if
- You will add marketing email, forms or a CMS in the same system
- Your sequencer, Clay and calendar must sync without custom work
- You may qualify for HubSpot for Startups pricing
Choose Attio if
- You want AI and enrichment inside the CRM from day one
- You will shape your own objects, such as partners or investors, on Pro
- Your team will stay at 10 seats or fewer on Plus for now
Set it up in week one
- Define five deal stages that match how your buyers decide, such as lead, meeting, proposal, won and lost. Fewer is better.
- Import one clean list, deduplicated and with company domains, so people attach to the right companies.
- Connect your inbox and calendar so emails and meetings log themselves. On Pipedrive this needs Growth.
- Connect your sequencer so replies and meetings from outbound land on the right record.
- Write down what each stage means, so a deal moves on evidence, not on hope.
- Build one report: deals by stage this week. Add more only when someone reads them.
Mistakes founders make with a first CRM
- Buying for the team you plan to have. Seats you do not use are the most common waste; start with the people selling today.
- Too many stages and fields. A pipeline nobody updates is worse than a spreadsheet.
- No owner. One person keeps the data clean, even if that person is the founder.
- Switching too early. Moving CRMs costs a week of cleanup; move when a limit costs you deals, not when a newer tool looks better.
- Logging by hand. If emails and meetings do not sync, the CRM falls behind within a month.

Questions
What is the best free CRM for a startup?
HubSpot's free CRM (up to 2 users and 1,000 contacts) and Attio's free plan (up to 3 seats and 50,000 records) are the two most common free starts. HubSpot has more integrations; Attio has AI and enrichment built in.
Is HubSpot's free CRM really free?
Yes, with no expiry, for up to 2 users and 1,000 contacts. Sequences, workflows and forecasting need Sales Hub Professional, at $90 a seat a month plus a one-time $1,500 onboarding fee.
Is Attio better than HubSpot for startups?
It depends on the job. Attio suits teams that want AI and enrichment on their records and a larger free plan. HubSpot suits teams that will add marketing, service and content tools in one system later.
How much does a CRM cost for a small team?
Entry paid plans run from about $14 to $35 per seat a month on annual billing, as of October 2026: Pipedrive Lite, HubSpot Starter, Folk Standard, Salesforce Starter and Attio Plus. Five seats cost about $70 to $175 a month.
What is HubSpot for Startups?
A HubSpot program with discounts on Professional and Enterprise plans for eligible early-stage startups, usually through an approved partner such as an accelerator or investor. Third-party guides report up to 90 percent off the first year.
When should a startup switch CRMs?
When a real limit costs you deals or hours every week: seats, automation, reporting or an integration you need. Not because another tool looks newer; a move costs a week of cleanup.
